PCC and SMG-Style Carbines: Kuna vs Vector vs Scorpion

Three different takes on a 9mm carbine

The Springfield Armory Kuna, KRISS Vector CRB and CZ Scorpion 3+ all shoot 9mm and look like submachine guns. All three are semi-automatic only. They differ in how they work, what magazines they use and, most of all, how they're sold.

Springfield Armory Kuna

The Kuna is a roller-delayed blowback design, the same idea as the HK MP5, made with HS Produkt. It sells as a pistol with a 6 in barrel, about $1,149 with a brace or $999 without.

Good: a smooth-shooting roller-delayed action at about half the price of an MP5 clone, a full-length top rail and ambidextrous controls. Less good: it uses its own magazines, about $25 each for the 30-round version, and some owners report a case-behind-buffer malfunction.

KRISS Vector CRB

The Vector CRB is a rifle with a 16 in barrel, about $1,599. Its recoil system moves the bolt down and away from your hand, which keeps the muzzle flat.

Good: it takes common Glock magazines in 9mm, 10mm and .45 ACP, and because it's a 16 in rifle, it's a plain Title I firearm with no NFA questions. Gen II models have a built-in AR buffer tube, so AR carbine stocks like the Magpul MOE SL-K (about $40) fit directly. Less good: it weighs about 8 lb and sits tall over the bore.

CZ Scorpion 3+

The Scorpion 3+ is a straight blowback pistol with a 7.8 in barrel, about $1,199, and it ships without a brace.

Good: the biggest aftermarket of any 9mm PDW, a factory M-LOK handguard, and cheap Magpul PMAG 35 EV9 magazines at about $19. Less good: the factory trigger is long and gritty, and the blowback recoil feels snappier. A drop-in trigger like the HB Industries Delta Trigger (about $38) is a common first fix.

Pistol, rifle, or SBR

This is where people get confused. The Kuna and Scorpion are sold as pistols. Adding a shoulder stock to a pistol with a barrel under 16 in turns it into a short-barreled rifle under the NFA. Pistol braces have also gone through several rule changes and court cases in recent years.

In October 2026 ATF said it would stop enforcing NFA registration for SBRs and suppressors after federal court rulings. That is a policy, not a repeal, so it could change. Taking an SBR across state lines still needs ATF Form 5320.20, and many states have their own limits. Check current federal law and your state and local law before you buy or install anything, and ask a firearms attorney if you are unsure.

The Vector CRB avoids most of this because it's already a 16 in rifle.

Which one fits you

First upgrades for any of them

A red dot is the biggest improvement. The SIG Sauer Romeo5 Gen II (about $129) and the Holosun AEMS Core X2 (about $300) both fit the top rails on all three. Buy a few extra magazines next, then think about a light and a trigger.

All three are threaded 1/2x28, so 9mm muzzle devices fit. Suppressors are NFA items too, with the same policy and state-law caveats as above.

Compare them in the studio

The SMG Studio also covers the HK SP5, B&T APC9 PRO, SIG MPX K and Ruger PC Carbine. Pick a model and the parts list filters to what fits it. Prices are rough street prices and change often, so check current listings before you buy.
