AK Upgrades That Are Worth It (and Actually Fit)
First, know your AK
AK parts are less standard than AR parts. Before you buy anything, check three things about your rifle:
- Stamped or milled receiver. Most US AKs, like the WASR-10 and PSAK-47, are stamped. Milled rifles like the Arsenal SAM7R take different stocks and covers.
- Pattern. Yugo rifles like the Zastava ZPAP M70 use their own handguards and stock trunnion, so Yugo-specific parts are needed.
- Muzzle thread. Most 7.62x39 AKs are 14x1 LH. Many Arsenal rifles and AK-74 style rifles use 24x1.5 RH.
1. A way to mount an optic that holds zero
This is the most useful upgrade. A standard AK dust cover moves every time the rifle is cycled, so an optic on a cheap railed cover will drift.
If your rifle has a side rail, a side mount is the classic answer. If you want the optic lower and further back, use a railed dust cover built to return to zero, like the Texas Weapon Systems Dog Leg Rail Gen 3 (about $176). It comes in versions for AKM, PSA fixed stock and Yugo rifles, so match the version to your gun.
A compact red dot like the SIG Sauer Romeo5 Gen II (about $129) is a cheap way to get started.
2. A handguard you can use
The Magpul MOE AKM Hand Guard (about $36) is a drop-in swap on most standard stamped AKs and adds M-LOK slots for a light.
Be careful with handguards labeled as needing barrel work, such as the Magpul Zhukov. They require removing the lower handguard retainer, which is pressed onto the barrel. That is a job for a gunsmith or someone with the right press and fixtures.
3. A better trigger
Many factory AK triggers are gritty. The ALG Defense AKT-EL (about $121) is a popular semi-auto replacement with a smoother pull and a lightning bow that cuts down on the grinding feel. It is a drop-in part for most standard AKs, but follow the maker's instructions and function check the rifle afterward.
4. Stock and grip
The Magpul Zhukov-S (about $100) is a side-folding stock that installs in the stamped fixed-stock rear trunnion. Yugo rifles need the Yugo version. Underfolder and side-folder rifles from the factory already have different trunnions, so these stocks don't apply there.
A grip is the cheapest comfort upgrade. The Magpul MOE-AK+ (about $22) is larger and rubber-overmolded, and it uses the standard AK grip screw and nut.
5. Magazines and a muzzle device
Good magazines matter more than most accessories. The Magpul PMAG 30 AK/AKM MOE (about $15) is light and reliable for 7.62x39. Note that 5.45x39 and 5.56 AKs need their own magazines.
For less muzzle rise, a brake like the VG6 GAMMA 762 AK (about $67) threads onto 14x1 LH. Brakes are loud for people next to you, so think about where you shoot.
A legal note for imported AKs
Federal law limits how many imported parts a semi-automatic rifle built from imported parts can have. This is often called 922(r). Swapping parts on an imported AK can change your count, so check which parts are US-made before you change the stock, grip, handguard or trigger. Many US-made aftermarket parts count toward compliance. State laws on features like folding stocks and muzzle devices also vary. Check current federal law and your state and local law before you buy or install anything, and ask a firearms attorney if you are unsure.
What's not worth it
Cheap railed dust covers that don't lock in place, heavy quad rails you'll never fill, and parts that need you to drill or rivet the receiver unless you have the skills and tools. Open the AK Studio, choose your rifle, and it only shows parts tagged for that model. Prices are rough street prices and change often, so check current listings before you buy.
